New Delhi G20 Summit Updates: India set to roll out red carpet for world leaders; Biden-Modi bilateral on Friday

New Delhi G20 Summit Updates: Leaders from 18 members countries and special invitees have started arriving in Delhi to attend the G20 Summit being held in Delhi’s Bharat Mandapam auditorium from September 9 to 10. The G20 Summit 2023 is being held under India’s presidency. The two-day G20 will be attended by several top international leaders including US President Joe Biden, UK PM Rishi Sunak, French President Emanuel Macron, and heads of states of 15 members countries. Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin have decided to skip the summit for unknown reasons. US President Biden is scheduled to arrive on Friday and will hold a bilateral meeting with PM Modi.  Meanwhile, Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth has arrived in Delhi on a special invitation to attend the G20 Summit.

Here are the updates on New Delhi G20 Summit 2023:

7:00 PM: On the G20 Summit, Former Deputy NSA and Ambassador Pankaj Saran: “It’s a very special occasion for India and a very privileged occasion for India to host the G20 Summit. When the G20 Summit began in 2008, we never imagined that one day India would be actually hosting the G20 because the group is large. It consists of the richest countries of the world. It has countries which are major economies, including Russia, China, Saudi Arabia, Argentina, etc. So it’s a great honour for India to host and a matter of pride for all of us that all these leaders are going to come to India…”

6:40 PM: Prime Minister Modi back in Delhi after attending ASEAN-India Summit: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrives at Delhi airport after concluding his visit to Indonesia’s Jakarta, where he attended the 20th ASEAN-India Summit and 18th East Asia Summit.

6:30 PM: On G20 Summit, Mauritius PM Pravind Jugnauth: “I think there could not have been a better theme that has been chosen by India – One Earth, One Family and One Future – which is drawn from the Sanskrit phase of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’. I think this is pertinent more so when we look at the effect of climate change because what one country does, not only affects that country but also the whole world. That is why, we have to reflect collectively and we have to act collectively. Each one of us has a duty to save the planet and save the whole population. I am happy to see that India has taken this very inclusive approach and to try to get everybody on board…”

2:30 PM: On India’s G20 presidency, Executive Secretary of United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) Armida Alisjahbana says, “…The expectation (from India) is very high, especially in the geopolitical context…The expectation is very high, especially for the G20 leadership & commitment to the most pressing issues & challenges…Everyone is looking at the outcome of this Summit…”

1:30 pm: IMD to provide round-the-clock weather updates: “IMD is functioning round the clock to provide detailed weather forecasts for Delhi till 10th September. A separate webpage has also been created for the same. In this webpage, we have introduced a detailed forecast for 9 locations across Delhi, where the maximum footfall of the delegates is expected during the G20 Summit. On the webpage, there will be information about current weather conditions including humidity, temperature, wind speed and wind direction. Nowcast, valid for 3 hours will also be there on the webpage,” says IMD Scientist Soma Sen.

1:00 pm: Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on G20 under India’s presidency: “The preparations for G20 have been restricted to only September 8-10 but the entire year has been a year of India’s G20 presidency.”

11:55 AM: Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres on India’s pitch to include African Union into G20: “The UN has a very solid partnership with the African Union. Africa has a serious problem of representation in today’s international institutions. When they were created, the African continent had few independent countries. Most of the countries were still under colonial regimes…I’m strongly supportive of the presence of an African country, at least as a permanent member of the Security Council, that I consider it is essential to reform Africa to have a stronger participation. I would be very happy to see the African Union as a member of the G20,” ANI quoted him as saying.

11:30 AM: Security checks underway in Raj Ghat area: Preparations & security checks underway in Delhi for the upcoming G20 Summit that is scheduled to be held here on September 9-10.

11:05 AM: Where will top world leaders stay in Delhi: US President Joe Biden will arrive on Friday and he will stay at ITC Maurya. Shangri La hotel has been booked for UK PM Rishi Sunak, while Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will stay in The Lalit Hotel. 10:45 AM: Round-the-clock security in Delhi: Massive security arrangements have been made by the Delhi Police in the national capital ahead of the G20 Summit. Foot march and patrolling drills are being carried out by Delhi police personnel. 10:35 AM: Mauritius PM arrives in Delhi: Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth has arrived in Delhi for the G20 Summit. Mauritius is not part of the G20 but Jugnauth will attend the event as a special invitee.

10:30 AM: G20 Member Countries: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, United Kingdom, and the United States and the European Union are the permanent members of the G20 also know as Group of 20.
